Huntingdon sets team record in men's basketball during 2005-06 season
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon College men’s basketball team etched its name into the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) all-time record book, setting the Division III record for defensive field goal percentage last season.
The Hawks posted a mark of 35.4 percent, surpassing the previous record of 36.0 percent, established by Baruch (N.Y.) College in 2000. The percentage also ranks second all-time among all NCAA Divisions, trailing only the 2000 Stanford team, who held its opponents to only 35.2 percent.
“Our program counts it an honor to be recognized as the NCAA Division III All-Time Defensive Field Goal Percentage leader,” Huntingdon men’s basketball head coach Tony Duckworth said. “Division III basketball is outstanding, and to be in the record books of all NCAA levels, trailing only Stanford, in this category is humbling. Completing the 2005-2006 season as the National Statistical Champion is a credit to the character and commitment of the players in our program.”
During the 2005-06 season, the Hawks held their opponents to less than 45.0 percent from the field in 26 of 27 games and less than 50.0 percent in all 27 contests. Maryville College was the lone team to exceed the 45.0 percent mark, shooting 46.6 percent in an 80-73 victory over Huntingdon on Jan. 8, 2006. In 22 games, the Hawks held their foes to 40.0 percent or less and to 30.0 percent of less in six games. The Hawks were also third among Division III in field goal percentage defense in the 2004-05 season at 37.0 percent.
Last season, Huntingdon posted a 20-7 overall record with a 6-2 mark in Great South Athletic Conference (GSAC) play, including a 13-game win streak to close the season. The Hawks earned both the GSAC regular season and conference tournament titles, defeating Maryville in the finals.
Huntingdon will open the 2006-07 season on Nov. 17 at the Great South/USA-South Tip-Off Classic IV, in Ferrum, Va. The Hawks will face both Ferrum College and Greensboro College in the tournament.
