Phillips steps down as Huntingdon women's basketball coach
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Scott Phillips has resigned as the women’s basketball head coach at Huntingdon College, citing personal reasons. His resignation will begin immediately.
“Since I was five years old, there has not been one year in my life that I have not been involved in athletics,” Phillips said. “I feel that at this point in my life I need to move on. Right now, my top priority is spending time with my family and exploring options outside of athletics.
The competitive fire that once burned inside of me is no longer there.”
Director of Athletics Buzz Phillips will take over the Lady Hawks as interim head coach for the remainder of the season. Assistant Coach Andrea Ward will also have an increased role during the coaching vacancy.
“I never expected to be back in this situation, especially two years in a row,” Buzz Phillips said. “I hate to see this decision made by Scott, but I will respect his decision and we will move forward. I am in an awkward position, not knowing the team as well as I need to, especially with a game tonight. However, I have the utmost confidence in (assistant
coach) Andrea (Ward) and will depend on her greatly, as she, I and the team continue this season.”
Phillips took over the Lady Hawks last season for the departing Houston Kennedy, who left to tend to family matters. During his 14 games at the helm, Phillips guided Huntingdon to a 9-5 record and a third-place Great South Athletic Conference finish. The Lady Hawks were 2-10 at the time Phillips became interim head coach.
The Lady Hawks are currently 0-3 on the season and will be without the services of 2005-06 GSAC Player of the Year, Tiffany Jordan, who went down with a season-ending injury early in the second game.
They will return to action tonight when they host Atlanta Christian College in a double-header with the men’s team, beginning at 5 p.m., at The Brick House, Delchamps Student Center Gymnasium. Admission to the contest is free.
