Huntingdon names new women's soccer coach
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Huntingdon College director of athletics Buzz Phillips announced the hiring of Stephen Andrew to the position of women’s soccer head coach on Wednesday.
“I fell very confident in the addition of Stephen (Andrew) as women’s soccer coach,” Phillips said. “He is coming from a great program in Piedmont College and was responsible for a large share of their recruiting. He has a great recruiting network throughout the southeast and I am excited to add him to the staff.”
During the past three seasons, Andrew has served as an assistant coach men’s and women’s soccer coach at Great South Athletic Conference foe Piedmont College. In his three seasons, the Lions captured one GSAC Championship and earned Runner-Up in another seasons, while the Lady Lions posted a pair of second-place finishes in conference.
While with Piedmont, Andrew was responsible for design and organizing direct training programs, scheduling matches, purchasing of equipment and supplies and monitoring the academic performance of student athletes. He also played an integral role in the recruiting process.
In addition to his work with Piedmont, Andrew also spent the past four seasons coaching in the Lanier Soccer Association, where he was responsible for the technical and tactical development of players.
“This is a great opportunity,” Andrew said. “For a young coach to take over a program in a rebuilding stage will be a great challenge. However, Coach (Kevin) Ray did a great job last year and hopefully we will be able to get a large recruiting class in for next season. I am excited about the opportunity and look forward to competing in the Great South Athletic Conference”
Prior to joining the coaching ranks, Andrew enjoyed a stellar playing career at Piedmont. A four-year starter from 2000-2003, he is the all-time goal scorer in Piedmont’s history with a career total of 114 goals.
He was Great South Player of the Year and an All-Conference member four times.
Andrew was also the NCCAA South Region Player of the Year and All-Region team and All-American team four times. He led the Lions to the school’s first ever NCCAA Division-III postseason in 2003 in the first year of eligibility and advanced to the Sweet 16.
A 2004 Piedmont graduate in sports marketing, Andrew is currently pursuing his master’s degree in business administration.
