Maryville blanks Spelman to win GSAC women's soccer championship

The Maryville College Women’s soccer team accomplished one of their goals today in Georgia, but their work is far from complete. In today’s Great South Tournament championship game, the Scots had to battle a Spelman team that wasn’t going down without a fight. After one half of play the two clubs found themselves deadlocked at zero, but Maryville decided to show once again why they dominate this conference. Junior Sarah Powell got the Scots on the board with her 12 th goal of the season, with the assist going to Lauren Metts. Later in the half, tournament MVP Jessica Casler provided a little insurance by notching her third goal of the year. Finally, the game was broken wide open when Metts scored a goal of her own, finishing off Spelman 3-0. The win gives Maryville another Great South Conference championship, and provides the club with momentum heading into next weekends NCAA Tournament. Coach Fernandez had this to say about his team’s Great South title, “We set several goals when this season began, and certainly a conference championship was the first one. Yet, this club knows that our main goal all along is to make a post-season run, and we will get that chance. I am very proud of this team and how they played all season long, but our work is far from complete.”
