Maryville men lose to Millsaps in NCAA tournament
JACKSON, Miss. - The Maryville College Scots basketball team lost in the opening round of the NCAA Division III National tournament to host Millsaps College by the score of 80-72 in Jackson, Mississippi on Friday evening.

Despite going 1-for-11 from beyond the arc in the first half, the Scots overcame a five point deficit and trailed by only one, 33-32, at the half.

The Majors’ lead during the second half was no more than six points until the 8:00 mark. A rebound and basket by Edrick Montgomery put Millsaps up by seven and began a 12-1 run for the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference champions. Montgomery finished with 28 points while Chris Saunders added 18.

The Scots had trouble with Millsaps 1-3-1 zone and their perimeter attack finished 4-for-24 on the evening with a pair of treys made only in the final 38 seconds.

Maryville (24-3) was paced by Christopher Orr’s 14 points. Andrew Shumate finished with 12 while Eryk Watson and Ben Williamson contributed 12 and 10 points respectively. Senior Alex Bowers finished his career with seven points.

The loss snaps Maryville’s 17 game win streak (a new school record) and their NCAA record with nine consecutive wins in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

Millsaps will advance to the round of 32 on Saturday and will host the University of Mary Hardin Baylor who defeated Fontbonne 65-62 earlier in the day.
