24th-ranked Oglethorpe tops Piedmont women in NCAA tournament
The Piedmont College women's basketball team was eliminated from the 2008
NCAA Division-III national tournament this evening by in-state rival and 24th
ranked Oglethorpe University by the score of 91-78 in Crestview Hills, KY. The
Lady Lions, who earned their second consecutive trip to the postseason, could
not overcome the high powered offense from the Stormy Petrels in the season
finale.
PC finishes the stellar 2007-08 campaign with an overall record of 24-4 including the second Great South Athletic Conference title in as many seasons. The Lady Lions stand as the only team in Piedmont history to make back to back appearances in the NCAA Division-III postseason.
Oglethorpe jumped out to an early advantage in the first few minutes of the game to take command. With 11 minutes remaining in the first frame the Stormy Petrels connected on a three-pointer to take a 26-15 double digit advantage, the margin that would remain for the duration of the contest. When the first half came to a close PC found themselves trailing 49-38.
In the second half the Lady Lions trailed by a game high 21 points with 15 minutes remaining. Piedmont would cut the lead to as many as 11, and when the final buzzer sounded Oglethorpe walked away with the 91-78 victory.
OU accounted for two of the Lady Lions' mere four losses on the season and will move on to take on tournament host and undefeated Thomas More Collge. The Saints, currently ranked #3 nationally, defeated Greensboro College in the second game of the doubleheader this evening to advance to the round of 32.
