Piedmont baseball gets at-large bid to NCAA Division III national tournament
The NCAA Division-III Baseball Committee has announced the 54 teams that will compete in the 2008 NCAA Division-III Baseball Championship with Piedmont College earning the school's first-ever NCAA post season appearance. The #11 Lions will be the third seed in a six team regional at Dan Daniel Park, home of an Atlanta Braves minor league team, and will face fourth-seeded Lynchburg College at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, May 14.
The South Regional will be co-hosted by the USA-South Athletic Conference and the Old Dominion Athletic Conference at Dan Daniel Park in Danville, Virginia. The regional will start on Wednesday, May 14 and run through Sunday, May 18.
Piedmont earned one of the nation's six Pool B bids reserved for teams that are national independents or in conferences without a national qualifier.
The NCAA selection is the sixth for the school since Piedmont became full-fledged NCAA members five seasons ago as the men's soccer (2003), men's tennis (2004), women's basketball (2007 & 2008), volleyball (2007), and softball (2006) teams have each earned NCAA post-season participation as well.
Six teams will compete at five first-round sites; eight teams will compete at three first-round sites. All first rounds will use a double-elimination format. Thirty-four conference champions qualified automatically. Winners of the eight first-round tournaments will qualify for the double-elimination championship at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton, Wisconsin, May 23-27.
