Maryville College will travel to Southwestern University in Georgetown this weekend to challenge the nationally-ranked UT Dallas volleyball team in the first round of the South Regional in the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament. The Scots (29-5) will meet the Comets (25-0) in the opening round Thursday.
UTD, which won its second consecutive American Southwest Conference championship last weekend, is the only undefeated Division III team in the nation at 25-0. The Comets were ranked No. 10 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association's national poll last week. Maryville swept through the Great South Athletic Conference tournament last weekend, earning their 8th league title and 9th bid to the NCAA post season.
The South Regional will, however, feature two other teams which are ranked ahead of UTD in the NCAA's Regional Rankings. The top-seeded team in the region is defending national champion Emory University (GA), which earns a first-round bye at 34-5 on the season. Host Southwestern (33-3) is ranked second in the region and will face the North Eastern Athletic Conference champion University of Dallas (20-19) in the opening round.
Southwestern University in Georgetown was announced early Monday morning as the host for the South Regional. All games will be played at Southwestern's Corbin J. Robertson Center. The Thursday bracket matchups include: 2:00 Trinity (TX) vs Randolph-Macon, 4:30 Texas-Dallas vs Maryville (TN), and 7:00 p.m. University of Dallas vs Southwestern (TX). Emory will play the winner of the Trinity/Randolph Macon match at 4:30 on Friday.
