The Maryville College Scots volleyball team battled against the #2 regionally ranked Pirates of Southwestern University on their home court in Georgetown, Texas during the second round of the 2009 NCAA Division III Volleyball tournament. The Scots fell in three sets by the scores of 16-25, 18-25, and 21-25 to finish their season with a record of 30-6.

Southwestern (35-3) took the set advantage when they out hit MC 25-16 and Maryville’s closest account was a 12-9 disadvantage in the second set until the Pirates pulled away after out attacking the Scots .220 to .118. Back-to-back kills by Kara Strickland made the score 18-24 but the Pirates closed out the set 18-25.

The third set saw the Scots pull out to a 3-0 advantage. MC extended their lead to 9-5 for their biggest lead of the set, but Southwestern would battle back to a 16-16 tie. A kill by Kristin Findley tied the match at 19-19, but back-to-back ball handling errors (MC’s 5th and 6th of the evening) allowed the Pirates to pull ahead for good. Lindsay Thompson deposited her 11th kill to finish MC’s season by the score of 21-25.

Kristin Findley paced Maryville at the net with 12 kills while adding a pair of service aces and six digs. Kara Strickland was also big for MC’s offense with 11 kills. GSAC Player of the Year and senior Lindsy Little finished with six kills, 14 digs, and a pair of solo blocks.

Southwestern, who will face Trinity at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday in the regional finals, was paced by Audra Gentry’s 12 kills. Thompson added 11 kills while Rachel Thibadeau finished with 10 kills. Trinity defeated #1 seed Emory University earlier in the day 3-0 by the scores of 20-25, 23-25, 19-25.
