Maryville blanks Piedmont for men's soccer championship

The Maryville College men’s soccer program competed in the Great South Conference Tournament Championship today versus Piedmont College. The Scots scored early and often to defeat the Lions by a score of 3-0.
Maryville (13-2-3) got on the board just five minutes into the game when Daniel Gomez netted his first goal of the campaign. The Scots struck again with two minutes remaining in the first half when Kevin Nolan tapped the ball past the Piedmont keeper. The goal was Nolan’s first of the season and the Scots took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
The Scots opened the game wide open in the 79th minute when Travis Bolton redirected a Brian Beckham pass into the back of the net. Maryville went on to win the contest 3-0, and was crowned the 2009 GSAC Tournament Champions.
Bryan Walker had nine saves to earn the shutout in goal for the Scots. The tournament’s most valuable player was Maryville’s Robert Hudson.
