Montgomery, Ala.-The Maryville College baseball team swept through the 2009 Great South Athletic Conference baseball tournament and earned the title today with an 8-5 victory over No. 1 seeded Huntingdon College.
After two late inning comebacks to get to the championship game, the Scots had a 6-0 lead after seven complete innings. The Hawks (26-15) finally got on the board in the eighth inning with five runs to make it a one-run ballgame. MC answered in the bottom of the inning with a pair of runs setting the stage for Brett Burdsall to close the game with two innings of two-hit pitching. Tournament MVP Matt Johnson threw one of his best games as a Scot, scattering seven hits in seven innings of work.
Maryville (22-18) was paced offensively by their three All-GSAC selections. Shortstop Aaron Johnson went 3-for-5, as did thirdbaseman Eric Vetetoe. GSAC Player of the Year and Oak Ridge native Ben Peters finished his senior season with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate. Nic Baker and Vetetoe paced MC with two runs batted in each.
The Scots earned their fourth GSAC baseball championship since the beginning of the league in 2000. Maryville is the only school in the league to claim four titles on the diamond.
